Meet Gaz
Functional Canine was built around one simple belief: every dog deserves the opportunity to become a calm, confident and functional companion, and every owner deserves the knowledge and support to help them get there.
For me, dog training isn't about teaching endless tricks. It's about helping owners build dogs that can confidently navigate the real world, whether that means walking politely through busy streets, settling in cafés, enjoying family days out or simply being a pleasure to live with.
Great training is only one piece of the puzzle. I look at the bigger picture too, across training, behaviour, enrichment, nutrition, exercise, routine and lifestyle, because happier, healthier dogs are built through good foundations and understanding.
Dogs have been a huge part of my life for many years, from Rottweilers and Labradors to Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, American Bulldog crosses and Cocker Spaniels, and now my Tibetan Mastiff, Bodhi, who is also a fully assessed therapy dog. Alongside him you'll meet Ryder, my young Cocker Spaniel, and my two old boys enjoying retirement.
I keep learning through the IMDT and the Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour and Training, because the best trainers never stop.
My philosophy is simple. Train the dog in front of you. No two dogs are the same, so no single approach fits every dog, and my goal is always to find the most appropriate, ethical and effective way to help both dogs and their owners succeed.
Thanks for following from the beginning, and welcome to Functional Canine.
